Using air to remove the soil greatly reduces the possibility of injury, helps us locate and extract girdling roots, and find areas of root and trunk decay hidden underground. Since oxygen is essential for plant health, we use it to aerate compacted soils.

The
air-spade is a relatively new tool we use to excavate soil from
root systems without harming roots. We have been using the air-spade
to remove soil from tree trunks and root collars for both diagnostic
and tree health reasons.
